SUGAR HILL CRANBERRY CO. is a small family cranberry farm located in the small downeast coastal town of Columbia Falls, where 3 varieties of cranberries are grown on just over 11 acres of bogs.
Prior to moving to Maine, John and Christine, lived on 130 acres of cranberry bogs in Massachusetts' cranberry country and have brought their experience and love of cranberry growing to Maine back in 1998. They incorporate both new techiniques as well as some of the "old ways" as Christine's relatives did back in the 1940's .
The varieties of cranberries grown on Sugar Hill Cranberry's bogs are:
PILGRIMS,which are the largest variety and is essentially used for juice/concentrate.
Our most popular variety for fresh fruit are the STEVENS, which you can see are larger than what you traditionally purchase at your local market. They were developed in the 1930s in WI and grow well in coastal Maine.
Howes is the smallest cranberry we grow and is an heirloom variety that dates back to the 1860s. They are perfect size for baking and they do have the longest shelf life, because they are a late harvest cranberry.
Cranberry growing is a year-round endeavor with something always that needs to be done! From early blossoms and frost protection , bee pollination and irrigating, harvesting to winter flood, and eventually sanding during the winter months.
Our 2016 cranberry harvest starts September 23 with some hand-scooped berries. This freshly harvested fruit is offered in one-pound reclosable bags, bulk, as well as wholesale for orchards, farmstands, CSAs, winemakers, etc. Bulk orders are also welcomed.
